Being the best at something

I was thinking today about how good I felt when I was the best player in a League of Legends match. Its just a game and for fun and has no relevance whatsoever to anything in the real world and yet
there is quite a lot of gratification in doing something so well. Competition doesn’t always fit in the classroom however. The questions in my head are…

1. What are some examples of successful use of competition in education?
2. What does current research say about education and competition?
3. What are the pitfalls of using competition as a motivational tool?
